Which Are The Best Article Directories for My Articles?
by Avril Harper

One of today’s most popular online marketing activities involves placing articles on other people’s websites to create backlinks and drive traffic to the writers’ own websites or to sites belonging to clients.   Those articles might focus on specific goods and services, or mention a free gift for signing up to a mailing list, and they’ll invariably end with an active link back to writers' or clients' own websites.

It’s this active link that creates backlinks that lie at the heart of effective internet marketing.

Article marketing is very straightforward, until someone asks the question: ‘Which are the best article directories for me to use?’   It’s a very good question, but a difficult one to answer, because there are many sites that qualify as best article directories and just as many directories offering few or no benefits to marketers.  Knowing how to recognise the best article directories, in terms of generating backlinks and traffic, is crucial to your success as an article marketer.

It’s also useful to know that articles can generate backlinks and traffic from forums and blogs, whatever the writer or publisher thinks might suit his articles best.  Article directories,  however, have one main benefit over forums and blogs, being that other publishers can download articles from directories and reprint them on their own websites on condition they include an active link back to sites featured in the article.  The fact one article can be republished hundreds of times on other people’s websites means more backlinks and traffic growing exponentially across the internet for writers and their clients.

So what do we really mean when we talk about ‘best article directories’?

Primarily, ‘best’ refers to how the directory is perceived by search engines and how well it serves customers of companies like Google and Yahoo.  The greater the benefits to search engine users, the higher a directory will usually rank in search engine returns.    So with a few minor exceptions ‘best article directories’ are those ranking high in search engine returns for specific search terms and subjects.

Overwhelmingly the best article directories  contain thousands of unique articles providing in-depth information on a wide variety of subjects, compared to others with out-of-date inaccurate articles copied from other sources which will rank low or nowhere in search engine returns.

Additionally, ‘best article directories in terms of benefits to article writers and their clients have what Google calls ‘High PageRank’, meaning they regularly rank high in search engine returns.

PageRank varies on a scale of 1 for lowest PageRank, to 10 for highest, with most of the world’s best article directories ranking 5, 6 or 7 on the scale.

Tip: Key ‘best article directories’ into Google and you’ll discover several websites providing lists of HighPage rank article directories.  These are the places to upload your articles.

For the record my votes for ‘best article directories’ go to Ezine Articles (www.ezinearticles.com) and Article Dashboard (www.articledashboard.com).
