Great Product Ideas

Ideas are the life of your Internet business and the reason your online business will succeed where many others fail.  Let these ideas for finding products help your Internet business grow quickly and prosper.

*  Get as many catalogues and advertising magazines as you can from other parts of the world.  Investigate what's on offer and look for ways to introduce similar items to your business.  This can be done by copycatting - being careful not to breach copyright or other protection laws - or by asking the original seller if you can represent him and his product in your home country.

*  First of all, test the domestic market to make sure the product sells before committing time and money to a subsequently useless venture.

*  Look for manufacturers all over the world of products suitable for selling in the marketplace you propose.  Keep an eye open for appropriate liquidation and surplus stocks.  Study the basics of import/export to help you introduce those products to your own or other countries.

*  Copycat.  By copying the opposition, you have a profitable product whose market has already been tested.  But you will be sharing that market with your competitors and sometimes profits will be enough to go around; sometimes not.  Test your product and market well before committing large reserves of capital to your project.

*  Bear in mind your competitors might have gathered years of experience which makes it easy for them to market their product.  It might be the product will not be profitable without that experience.  Beware!

*  Creative imitation - more flattering than 'copycatting' - is the mainstay of many, many successful businesses.  To imitate successfully: look for repeat advertisements for particular products; look for shortfalls and flaws in them; investigate and initiate subtle changes; emphasise the differences; make your product that little bit better and more appropriate for your target audience.

*  Make a point of checking the opposition for items you will be selling and learn what you can from their web site development and marketing strategies.  If you haven't decided what to sell yet, spend several weeks browsing the net, looking for suitable products.

*  Competition is not always a bad thing, in fact numerous firms selling the same or similar products could be worth emulating. More people working hard at selling one or a range of similar items suggests demand is high with plenty of scope for more competitors to share the profits.

BUT

*  No-one else selling your chosen product doesn't necessarily mean you've found a gap in the market, unless, for example, you spot an overseas site selling products which are not yet available elsewhere.  But be careful.  Too few people or no-one selling a particular product could indicate demand is low or non-existent.
