Internet Web Site Design Tips
* View your web site using different browsers to see what others see. Reason: Some browsers create quite different images of web sites to those you may be familiar with. For example, my own web site - www.avrilharper.com - looks great viewed through the browser on both my PCs, but on the Apple Macintosh, the computer I use most, it looks very different - the colours are lighter, the layout is distorted, some of the sales letters look as though a spider crawled over them! Not good. So my next job is to re-create the web site in a way that makes it appear more professional for Macintosh users.
* Don't place too many external links on your site. It's off-putting and can detract interest from your products, not to mention representing an invitation for visitors to move fast to other people's sites. Be selective and favour those attracting high profits for you.
* Use light coloured backgrounds where possible. They take less time to download and are easier on the eye.
* Include a 'suggestions box' asking visitors to say what they like or do not like about your site and inviting comments on additional products and services they'd like to see included. Offer a small gift as a means of attracting suggestions.
* Offer a FAQ section to answer most Frequently Asked Questions about your business, products and service. Go to my site to see how it works - www.avrilharper.com
* Never miss an opportunity to provide useful information about your site. Did you see how I accomplished that in the last paragraph?
* Have a link on every page in your site to draw visitors back to your home page, or risk them moving elsewhere. Not everyone knows the 'back' button on all computers will return them to the home page - eventually - and few people are prepared to go through a long sequence of previously visited pages to get there! Let them go direct by clicking on your 'HOME' button.
* Don't have missing graphics on your site!
* Ask visitors and customers to link your site to theirs to attract more traffic your way. Offer to link their pages to yours to reciprocate. But not too many links for reasons mentioned earlier.
* Give a prominent place to awards your site has won.
